Family-Centered Maternity Care has been practiced at Gaston Memorial Hospital for almost twenty years. Mothers and babies remain together unless nursery care is medically indicated. Patient, physician and staff satisfaction is extremely high. Since 1991, The Gaston Memorial Hospital maternity program has sustained these outcomes of their Family-Centered Maternity Care program.

Expectant mothers are given maternal and newborn clinical pathways during prenatal classes. The woman knows what to expect for herself and her infant and works with the nurse toward mutually planned goals. The facility design is now 52 Labor Delivery Recovery Postpartum rooms (LDRPs) and 16 all private NICU rooms.
