World Class Personnel - World Class Results

Phillips+Fenwick, Inc., was founded in 1987 by Celeste R. Phillips, RN, MSN, EdD, and Loel Fenwick, MD.

At Phillips+Fenwick, we believe in the importance of strong, healthy families, and we work to help our hospital clients develop Family-Centered Maternity Care (FCMC) programs. Our expertise lies in creating hospital cultures that support and prepare providers and staff to practice Family-Centered Maternity Care.

Family-Centered Maternity Care is a way of providing care for women and their families that integrates pregnancy, childbirth, postpartum, and infant care into the continuum of the family life cycle. The care provided is individualized and recognizes the importance of family support, participation, and choice.

Our experience has demonstrated that a FCMC program can be a viable business strategy to maintain and expand patient volumes, reduce healthcare costs, and improve health outcomes for women and their families. Over the years we have learned that FCMC is "the right thing to do" and doing the right thing is good business.

Loel Fenwick, MD - Principal, Chairman

Loel FenwickDr. Fenwick designed and manufactured the American birth bed, created the Single-Room Maternity Care concept, and developed the LDRP and "cluster" design approach for contemporary maternity care units. He has conducted numerous architectural reviews and developed conceptual plans for maternity care services of all sizes. Dr. Fenwick advises Phillips+Fenwick clients on various functional planning and facility issues.

Facility Planning - The decision to proceed with facility plans follows strategic planning and consensus - form following function. The first setp in this process is to assess the hospital's current market environment and demand potential. The program data analysis includes a review of the current program and its impact on program capacity. During the facility site visit, various site options are reviewed and a presentation to medical staff may be scheduled to discuss program analysis results and space requirements. It is also a forum to discuss concerns and problems that medical staff may have with the new program. Phillips+Fenwick calculates the room requirements and then develops the preliminary Functional Program and Space Plan.

Phillips+Fenwick and the hospital architect meet to review requirements and questions regarding the prelimary Functional Program and Space Plan. The architect may develop the design solution. However, Phillips+Fenwick provides input and assistance to the architect as required throughouth the design development process. In addition, Phillips+Fenwick offers optional items, including an equipment list, to further assist the unit's development.

Educational Presentations - Dr. Fenwick is an advocate for the physiologic approach to pain relief for labor and birth. His educational presentations for both nursing and medical staff include theory, evidence-base, and actual demonstration of the use of the birth bed as a tool to promote physiologic birthing.
